It was also written by a couple of Germans, which amuses me no end. You are correct though, instead of asking people to vote on existing candidates, why not set up a competition to write a tune that COULD become a new anthem. I emphasise the word 'could' because obviously such a song would need to gain popular public support before it became the anthem.

Rob, cheers for the encouragement, but I do believe that would be a very, very bad idea. The end results would not be pleasant. Besides, i'm at my worst when I sit down and write songs with a subject in mind......iLL Manhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08107892879700381858noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17080579.post-1152172919487822322006-07-06T09:01:00.000+01:002006-07-06T09:01:00.000+01:00I feel your pain Ill Man. Make it everything you ever wanted in an anthem, and then some.

You will do a fab job, I'm sure!

But the way, I'm curious to hear your voice, you want to consider doing a audio post sometime. Think about it.Rob7534https://www.blogger.com/profile/17146330168226676675noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17080579.post-1152152079961935612006-07-06T03:14:00.000+01:002006-07-06T03:14:00.000+01:00Chairwoman, you're right. It's about as appropriate as the line "rebellious Scots to crush" in God Save The Queen - another anthem in need of updating, methinks...

Ill Man, we do, indeed, need something new... FoS is a pleasant enough folksie song but complete crap as an anthem, whether you want a roaring nationalistic one of a more humanist one. It's all very wistful and sad, rather like the Del Amitri football song from a few years back... nice song but not exactly fulfilling its purpose.

Scots Wha' Hae (there is a music link on this FoS page - http://david.national-anthems.net/sco.htm - although it should be played faster) fits into the same category as Scotland the Brave... a bit too jaunty and fist-punchy.

A Man's a Man is a great piece but isn't a national anthem supposed to at least mention the nation, even if only in passing? Yes, we should have a more humanist anthem instead of jingoistic blind nationalism, but perhaps there is a better alternative...?

I'd like to see someone write a new anthem, something that reflects Scotland now. It should incorporate the humanist angle of A Man's A Man but should also take into account the cultural diversity of our nation in the 21st Century - like this from the Proclaimers:

In Scotland's story I read that they came
The Gael and the Pict, the Angle and Dane
But so did the Irishman, Jew and Ukraine
They're all Scotland's story and they're all worth the same

(full lyrics here - http://www.lyricsdownload.com/proclaimers-scotland-s-story-lyrics.html )Binty McShaehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06675394718164552966noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17080579.post-1152101492551562492006-07-05T13:11:00.000+01:002006-07-05T13:11:00.000+01:00Yes.
