Curiosity - if you didn't like it to begin with, why did you enter it?
I start the same way with most of these 250 word pieces, I never quite think they're as good as my longer stuff. I grow to appreciate them as time goes by. It's also a good exercise for getting feedback and improving my writing.
I rarely write much more than 250 words - it's a good size for a blog entry :)
Totally agree with you on that count. The shorter the better.
