Heroes Of Comedy No4 - Tommy Cooper

Standard issue Tommy Cooper. Better than 99% of what passes for comedy, both old and new. Tommy died in action many moons ago and by all accounts, liked a drink or two, possibly helping to edge him towards the trap-door a little before his time. The sad thing is that the mediocre hacks are nearly always teetotal non-smokers who go to the gym every day, thus living for fucking ever. Ben Elton, Graham Norton, Lenny Henry, Dawn French**, all about as funny as the plague, all still alive and all within reach of a TV studio and a fat cheque from Channel 4 and the BB fucking C, from which to torture us all with their vapid, insipid, miserably unimaginitive horseshit. Where's the justice in that?

**Yes, I know Dawn likes her Mars Bars, but her sheer lack of worth as an entertainer will keep her alive and bloated well into her eighties.

"Ben Elton, Graham Norton, Lenny Henry, Dawn French": a fine list of duds. If you watch The Secret Policeman's Ball series, you see the dreadful fall in standards after Cook, Pythons, Connelly and the like are replaced by no-hopers.

PS Alas, wonderful tho' Francis was as a stand-up comedian, I have no appetite for Up Pompeii. Titter me not.

Yeah, lots of over-rated crap came our way in the 80's, though as ever, there wre some gems amongst the 'alternative' crowd.

Could I find any Frankie Howerd standup? Could I bunnies!

I rather like Up Pompeii, but I appreciate it's not everyones cup of Tetley.

Dawn French - it occurs to me that the Vicar of Dibley is the only comedy show I've ever seen where everyone else in the cast is funnier than the lead. I enjoyed mad Alice and the committee of grotesques enormously.

Thanks for the clip. Brilliant, a fine comedian up there with Hancock who also died before his time.

DM - You are absolutely correct. The ensemble cast is worthy of note, but it's all undone by the whooping and gurning of Dawn French.

BW - No problem. Hancock is on my list...........
