West Enders Are A Godless Bunch

Amen to that brother............ The 2001 Census turned up some interesting figures for the way in which Glasgow as whole worships. Todays Herald has the full story here. It would seem that the West End is a hotbed of non belief, with most of the city's 131,000 atheists living there. Lovely. Depends on what you regard as the West End. Different people see it in different ways. To some it's everything west of the M8, to others it's Byres Road, the Uni and the BBC. To sign off tonight I leave you this; Apparently Britains first Temperance Society found it's home in Maryhill according to Andy T of the ptfc.net forum. As he dryly notes "I would say as an organisation, they failed......." I feel another "Amen" coming on..................

Naturally............

Have to say, I was being a tad flippant. The West End also happens to be fairly religously diverse. It actually took me by surprise a wee bit to find that so many Westenders are not religous.....

I would tend to define the West End as starting round about the MacLellan Galleries. If you then joined up Charing Cross, Mitchell Library, Kelvin Hall, Partick Underground, BBC Scotland, St George's Cross then back to MacLellan Galleries via the Art School I think you've marked out the West End. I loved living in the West End!! (1971 and 1991)
It beats Castlemilk, or Paisley, any day!
It also may be pertinent to your investigations to reveal that during my 5 months West End sojourn in 1971, I cast aside 20 years of constant heavy indoctrination into Calvinistic Puritan Protestant Christianity and explored almost everything from Atheism to Zen. (It was the drugs, wasn't it? Who needs a religion to worship a god when they feel like God themselves?)
But in a dream the other afternoon (I am nocturnal by nature) God, or certainly one of his angels, told me that for all my good work I am to be reborn in the "West End" - probably somewhere about Dowanhill!

Professor

Thanks for your comments. You too know the horror of the self
obsessed sending their life story for your perusal once a year.......

As for the West End, I see it simply as Home. It's where i'm from. You realise how hard i'm
trying not to say "It's a state of mind".......Aaaagh!

Thankyou also for the compliments. It's most gratifying to know
that people have a reaction to what you write, either positive or
negative. Who needs a blog review, eh? certainly not when you have
to pay for the sodding priviledge............
