Hi Rob. Canals in Britain were built and used during the industrial revolution to carry goods and raw materials between major cities. When the railways got up to speed, the canals were superceded. Today they are generally used for leisure purposes(boating holidays etc). They are also havens for wildlife and fauna.
The pictures are of the Glasgow branch of the Forth & Clyde Canal.
